Preventive Hygiene

By taking regular preventive hygiene measures at your dental office, you can help to prevent any dental issues from developing and protect your oral health.

What is Preventive Hygiene?

Preventive hygiene, including professional dental cleanings and fluoride treatments, are recommended for patients at least twice a year. Alongside a dental exam, these practices are important because your dentist and hygienist have the tools and expertise to get rid of plaque and calculus that regular brushing and flossing cannot remove.

Preventive Hygiene & Fluoride Treatments | Scotia Square Dentistry

Professional Dental Cleaning

Your preventive hygiene appointment at our Edmonton dental office will include a dental exam, and the following:

  • Removal of Calculus: Calculus (or tartar) is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed by your dental hygienist with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of Plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. Bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums and can lead to gum disease.
  • Teeth Polishing: Using an electric polisher, your dental hygienist can remove stains and plaque that are not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
  • Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride is a natural mineral that re-mineralizes tooth enamel and prevents harmful bacteria from building up in the mouth. Fluoride is applied to strengthen teeth and protect them from decay in both children and adults.
