How Does Invisalign Work?

How Does Invisalign Work?

The braces you remember seeing years ago aren’t your only option for straightening your teeth. Here, our Edmonton dentists describe how Invisalign clear aligners can help to align your smile.

How does Invisalign work?

Have you ever admired celebrities’ smiles and wished you could have straighter teeth, but shuddered at the thought of wearing those ugly metal brackets and tolerating the discomfort of wearing traditional braces? You’re far from the only one. Luckily, Invisalign clear aligners are an excellent option.

These aren’t the braces you remember seeing on your classmates from days gone by. In fact, Invisalign clear aligners are the opposite: custom-modelled to fit your teeth, virtually invisible, and perhaps best of all - you’ll be free from metal or wires. You can discreetly straighten your teeth and treat a number of issues, including:

  • Crossbites
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Clicking jaws
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Overly crowded teeth

Step 1: An In-Depth Assessment & Treatment Plan

Your dentist will perform an oral exam and assessment to learn whether you’d be a good candidate for Invisalign treatment. We’ll then create a treatment tailored to you that will gradually shift your teeth into their correct positions.

Before starting treatment, we’ll capture x-rays and create models of your teeth with iTero scanning technology. At each point in the process, we discuss your progress and track the movement of your teeth as they shift.

Step 2: Receive Your First Invisalign Trays

Each aligner is made so your teeth will be slightly straighter than they were with the previous tray (expect your teeth to shift up to 0.25 millimetres per tray). You’ll put in a new set every two weeks.

Wear the comfortable, smooth plastic over your teeth, which will gradually and gently move into place, according to the treatment plan that’s been customized to you.

Once you have your clear aligners in, you’ll need to wear them for about 20 hours each day. Remove them only to eat, brush, and floss. Once your final trays come out, you’ll wear a retainer full time for a couple of months, before gradually cutting back your use.

Step 3: A Fantastic Smile

If you follow your dentist's instructions through every step of this process, Invisalign can leave you with straighter teeth and a more confident smile. You’ll also have healthier gums, reduce your risk of tooth decay, and improve your overall oral health.

The dentists at Scotia Square Dentistry have experience in providing Invisalign to many happy patients. We can help you discover if you would be a good candidate.
