Inlays and onlays are cosmetic and functional restorations that can fix broken, misshapen, chipped, uneven or damaged teeth.
Inlays and onlays are dental fillings that are made outside of the mouth and then fitted to a tooth to repair damage. Each is formed using a mold of the damaged tooth and then bonded to your tooth. Inlays fill the grooves of a tooth (similar to a composite filling) while onlays cover a larger surface of the tooth.
You will need two appointments to have an inlay or onlay fitted.
At your first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay, if necessary, and then creating a mold of the tooth so your custom inlay or onlay can be created.
Your dentist will place a temporary filling on the tooth until the custom restoration is ready.
At your second appointment, the dentist will bond the restoration to your tooth and restore your smile.
Inlays and onlays reinforce and stabilize your natural tooth for a conservative fix while blending in and giving you a natural look.
They are custom-made and matched to your natural enamel and your original tooth shape.
If you are sure to brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and visit your dentist regularly, this restoration will last for many years.
In fact, when properly cared for, inlays and onlays can last for decades.
